The global banking sector is undergoing a period of profound transformation. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the commercial banks that are members of the ACB are at the forefront of this evolution, facing clients who are increasingly connected, demanding, and diverse.
Towards a More Accessible and Responsive Bank
The rapid expansion of mobile telephony in the DRC has fundamentally redefined customer expectations. Where the physical branch was once the primary point of contact, it is now the mobile phone that drives most interactions: balance inquiries, transfers, merchant payments, and information requests. This reality is compelling banking institutions to rethink their distribution models and invest heavily in reliable, accessible, and secure digital interfaces.
For the 15 ACB member banks, this transition represents both an operational challenge and a strategic opportunity: reaching a previously underbanked clientele, particularly outside major urban centres.
Financial Inclusion as a Guiding Principle
With over 17 million bank accounts open in a country of 100 million people, the room for growth is considerable. The ACB supports its members in implementing solutions adapted to Congolese realities: banking agents, mobile money, simplified savings products, and SME lending.
The goal is not simply to modernise tools, but to build lasting trust with clients whose needs are rapidly evolving — education savings, agricultural project financing, access to mortgage credit, and diaspora transfer management.
Security and Trust: Pillars of the Client Relationship
Adapting to new usage patterns cannot come at the expense of security. In an environment marked by rising cyberthreats and fraud attempts, Congolese banks are investing in stronger compliance frameworks, anti-money laundering measures, and client data protection.
The ACB plays a central role in coordinating these collective efforts — facilitating the sharing of best practices among its members and engaging with regulatory authorities to adapt the normative framework to digital realities.
A Sector in Motion, an Association in Support
In the face of these changes, the Congolese Banking Association reaffirms its mission: to support its members through transformation, defend their interests before public authorities, and contribute to building a Congolese financial system that is more stable, more inclusive, and more competitive.
The future of banking in the DRC is being built today — in technological choices, in inclusion policies, and in the quality of the relationship each institution maintains with its clients.
